This article draws its conclusions from a talk in the second year of a lab management programme, the Pylo Lab Management Program. What I’m really facing here is that some of these skills will not be shown to be transferable to other research studies using project staff. More specifically, the vast majority of the lab staff who arrive in the lab are university-trained. Whilst some are not from university, some are from intercultural studies or cultures. Most of these people are brought into this lab for specific courses of study – with little or no experience whatsoever. This is the kind of work that I find difficult to adequately pursue or even be encouraged to undertake. I’ve also enjoyed the suggestion that I’d be interested in doing some work in research labs and get someone who can provide an excellent assessment of what these skills are needed to be successful in the workplace. Nevertheless, it’s interesting that some “scientific papers” are presented as the only means of getting to the bottom of the group because they seem to be extremely important to study in the lab, with dozens of them highlighting relevant experiences from an intercultural environment. This obviously reflects the increasing focus on understanding where and why people are coming from, rather than just looking at a group of people who’s currently only trying to study how they function within a certain field. This is a nice way of being involved in work by someone with the right course of study, where people can actively participate and be engaged with their theoretical work by inviting them into a small group.
